Student interaction, gender, and university public space: an analysis based on observation and semantic mapping
Keywords:
University spaces, student interaction, gender violenceAbstract
University public spaces present challenges, acting both as agents that reproduce the existing social order and as spaces with transformative potential. In this duality, widely analyzed in educational research and theory, it becomes evident that, although higher education institutions have the capacity to question and transform structures of inequality, they have also historically contributed to their perpetuation. This occurs by sustaining hierarchical, patriarchal models that privilege knowledge produced by men while marginalizing other voices, bodies, knowledges, and trajectories. From another perspective, universities can also function as spaces of resistance, critical reflection, and the construction of new subjectivities. In recent years, driven by feminist student movements and social demands, many institutions have begun implementing gender policies, anti-violence protocols, feminist courses, and inclusive curricular mainstreaming programs.
