Student repetition is a problem that affects the internal efficiency of universities and the academic progression of students. The objective of the research is to characterize student repetition at a public university in southern Ecuador. The study adopted a quantitative, descriptive approach with a non-experimental design. Data were collected and analyzed from eight consecutive years (2017–2025) or 16 academic periods. The unit of analysis was the records of students enrolled in one of the 47 undergraduate programs offered by the institution during the period described. Among the main results, there is evidence of a weighted average student repetition rate of 8.90%, calculated on 195,978 unique students over the 16 periods. The data show a substantial decrease in 2020–2021 and a rebound in recent years, with a higher incidence in the first cycles, especially in the first and second cycles, continuing steadily through the fifth cycle. The phenomenon affects male students from rural areas and those attending morning and afternoon classes more intensely. These results not only provide an understanding of the magnitude and characteristics of the phenomenon in the institution analyzed, but also provide a replicable methodological framework for other universities.
